What is NeuroStar Advanced Therapy?

Front Street Clinic offers this NeuroStar Advanced Therapy as an alternative option for individuals struggling with major depression. The treatment involves the use of magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. It is considered a non-invasive option for those who may not have responded well to traditional antidepressant medications.

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of major depression. The therapy is FDA-cleared and is specifically designed for patients who have not experienced benefits from antidepressant medications.

How Safe is TMS?

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has been proven highly safe and effective in the treatment of depression. TMS Therapy is free of side effects typically experienced with antidepressant medications. The most common side effect associated with treatment is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment area – generally mild to moderate.

TMS therapy has demonstrated a good safety profile in clinical studies and real-world applications for treating major depression.

COMMON QUESTIONS REGARDING TMS THERAPY

Most frequent questions and answers

How does NeuroStar treatment work?

NeuroStar uses an MRI* strength magnet to stimulate the areas of the brain that control depression to increase blood flow, glucose metabolism, and the chemicals (neurotransmitters) that are underactive in patients with depression.

What are treatments like? (does it hurt, what does it feel like?)

While there may be some minor discomfort at the treatment site (where the device touches your head), it generally subsides within the first week or treatment. There is no sedation, or impact on your alertness. You can read, watch TV, or talk with your treatment coordinator during your session, and you can drive home immediately after treatment.

How long does each treatment last?

Your treatment will last under 19 minutes each day, and your full appointment should take no longer than 30mins. Your first treatment may take up to 60-90 minutes when your doctor determines the location and dosing of your treatment.

Does it work?

In a study of “real-world” outcomes (meaning actual NeuroStar patients), 83% of people who completed the full NeuroStar treatment cycle experienced a measurable decrease in the severity of their depression, and 62% of those completing treatment saw full remission – meaning their depression effectively “went away.”

How long does the treatment effect last?

NeuroStar conducted a clinical study that showed that after 12-months, 45.1% of patients-maintained remission, and 67.7% of patients maintained a positive response to treatment. 36.2% of these patients had an additional set of treatments, an average of 16 sessions. Many patients find that they do not need additional treatments after their initial course of therapy.

What are the side effects of NeuroStar Advanced Therapy? Any long term effects?

The most common side effect is discomfort at the treatment site. Some patients complain of a headache following treatments for the first few days. Your doctor may recommend taking an over-the-counter medicine before your treatment if you experience discomfort. Most patients find any discomfort lessens after the first 5 days of treatment.

Non Invasive Procedure

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy device is a completely painless and non-surgical procedure. No anesthesia is required.

No Negative Side Effects

After your session is over, you can confidently return to any regularly scheduled activities such as work or school. Your sleep will not be affected at all either.

What You Can Expect

During a NeuroStar Advanced Therapy session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. These magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission possible
